An Open Letter to the Citizens of Falls Church
As friends and supporters over the years, I want you to know that I am running for re-election to the
Falls Church City School Board on November 7th. It has been a busy four years since joining the board
with many challenges from aging and overcrowded facilities to making challenging budget decisions.
We have accomplished a great deal, but still have much to do to solve all our challenges. I want to continue to be a part of the solution.
One of the top reasons that people chose to live in our “Little City” has been the schools. We have seen considerable growth in our schools and are in need of expanding our facilities to absorb this growth. I would like to continue the work that has begun addressing a pre-K to 12 facilities solution. We have world class schools and need facilities that reflect our status. This will be a major investment for our community and I want the opportunity to continue to engage citizens as we move forward.
I am serving as the chair of the board this year and I am honored that my colleagues have entrusted me with leading them. The board has responded to the community and worked to develop a more open and transparent budget process with teachers, staff, and administrators playing an early role in developing the budget. We also worked with the City Council and community developing plans for the long overdue new George Mason High School. We recently presented the City Council with an option that met our education program, but also frees 10 acres for economic development. If Falls Church wants to continue to be known for its world class education, then we must provide 21st Century faculties for our students to learn and our teachers to teach.
The board also reviewed 38 highly qualified candidates from across the country to fill the position of superintendent position. We did not have to go very far to hire a great candidate in Dr. Peter Noonan. Dr. Noonan has been essential assisting the board in working with the public, staff and the council in planning for the new high school.
I welcome your input during and beyond the campaign.
